Cabo Calling: The Resort Scene is Hotter than Ever
Suffice it to say, Cabo is back and better than ever. This Mexican vacation destination took a brutal hit during 2014’s Hurricane Odile, but as typically happens when a storm does major damage, the affected resorts shut down for major renovations resulting in unexpected product upgrades region-wide. We love Cabo for its high-touch service, endless sunshine (350+ days per year) and convenience (Cabo is served directly from more than 30 national and international airports).
We’ve got our eye on the new properties under development by Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Montage Resorts all set to open within the next three years. But for now, take a look at five of our favorites, each of which comes complete with a full retinue of Virtuoso perks to ensure that your honeymoon, romantic getaway, or family adventure is full of extra special treatment.
The Cape, a Thompson Hotel: Cabo’s newest boutique hotel, The Cape, is also the first for Thompson brand in Mexico. Designed with a Mexico-meets SoCal vibe, The Cape is perfectly-positioned on Monuments Beach for surfing and other water sports, and offers unobstructed views of The Arch, one of the area’s most famous sites. We recommend the corner suites, which offer nearly 180-degree ocean views and private plunge pools. Manta, the hotel’s signature restaurant, offers endless views and Pacific Rim-meets-Mexican cuisine.
One & Only Palmilla: Decorated in lush tropical foliage with a tropical stylish vibe, Palmilla had a total overhaul post-Hurricane Odile. New additions include SEARED, an elegant steakhouse/seafood restaurant by Jean-Georges; a totally updated spa with a blowout bar and mani/pedi studio, plus more gratis fitness classes than anyone could possibly enjoy in a day. Brand new to the property this year is VILLA ONE, a four-bedroom residence complete with its own infinity pool, 24/7 butler service, floor-to-ceiling glass doors with nonstop views and a huge open-plan kitchen ideal for entertaining while enjoying pure privacy and full access to the resort. Our other favorite accommodations are the beautiful Villa Cortez residence and the oceanfront suites with private pools.
Esperanza, An Auberge Resort: Cabo’s only Relais & Chateaux, Esperanza is an intimate gem. In addition to its 57 rooms and suites, Esperanza features huge residential homes favored by families and groups of friends for their private pools, ocean views, staff on call and beautiful décor.
Couples should indulge in the romantic tasting menu style Cocina del Mar restaurant and split time between the beautiful spa and the multi-layer infinity pool with in-water lounge chairs.
Las Ventanas al Paraiso, a Rosewood Resort: A true shining star of the Rosewood portfolio, Las Ventanas boasts service so in tune with guests’ needs that items often appear as if the guest willed them into being. This resort is another favorite of honeymooners and those looking to truly unplug. For an over-the-top escape, book one of the private beachfront villas, where you’ll enjoy a private pool, 24 hour butler service, in-room massages, a stocked fridge and more.
The Resort at Pedregal: The key selling point of this independent luxury resort, in addition to spacious multi-room residential suites and villas, is its walk-to-town location. Perched cliffside, The Resort at Pegredal includes amenities like butler service and daily afternoon guacamole and coronas as standard along with a plunge pool in every suite. New highlights include the Champagne Terrace at fine dining restaurant El Farallon, the city’s best place to watch a dramatic cliffside sunset.
