Unplugging in Los Angeles: The trick? Follow the Locals.

With yoga studios, juice bars, organic cafes, cycling and meditation classes offered nearly everywhere you turn, it’s pretty impossible not to get your Zen on in LA. That said, it’s always a good idea to join the locals as they truly know which teachers, classes, juices and healthy meals are best. Here’s where we go personally to work-out, breathe, and eat well on city’s west side:

If you want to start with a serious yet fun full-body work-out before channeling your inner yogi, hit up a high-energy SoulCycle class. There are studios city-wide (we love the Brentwood studio best!) and favorite teachers are Lindsay Buckley, Jenny Canales and Laura Crago. Be sure to check out the online schedule book a bike well in advance since their classes often sell-out! If you opt for a Brentwood class, grab a smoothie or a green juice next door at EarthBar, or pop into nearby MCafe or Coral Tree Café for a more substantial healthy snack.

To balance out the fast-paced, calorie-burning cycling experience, our recommendation is to head to Santa Monica for a unique Kundalini yoga experience at Golden Bridge. Run by the world-renowned Gumurkh Khalsa and her daughter Wah (try to take their classes if they are in town), Golden Bridge offers gentle, relaxing and fun Kundalini yoga experiences for those of all levels. They also offer amazing workshops, and have a beautiful retail shop for that perfect soulful gift.

The other don’t miss spot for a major dose of relaxation in a beautiful setting is Unplug Meditation, where you can partake in drop-in classes that utilize different meditation techniques throughout the day and into the eve. Do not miss a Monday evening class with Steve Ross if possible; other instructors to try and include are Lauren Eckstrom, Olivia Rosewood and if you’re lucky, Mallika Chopra (Deepak’s daughter), who occasionally leads a class themed around her book “Living with Intent”. Unplug was founded by Suze Yalof Schwartz, a former NY-based Glamour magazing editor who moved to LA and opened Unplug with this mission: “To chill out everyone on the planet, including me!” Inside tip: If you’re up for experiencing a truly natural high, try one of JP’s Breathwork classes or settle in for a Saturday evening soundbath with Guy Douglas.

For healthy and delicious meals morning through night, it’s hard to do better than A Votre Sante which has been feeding the local, health-conscious, Brentwood/Santa Monica crowd since 1987. Just downstairs from Steve Ross’s Maha Yoga, it’s typically packed with those sporting a post-yoga glow or anyone craving a delicious bowl of organic vegan soup, gluten free pasta specials, freshly grilled organic fish, or delicious breakfast items served daily until 2pm. The desserts are so incredibly yummy you won’t even know they are void of gluten, dairy and sugar. Just around the corner in the Brentwood Country Mart you will find a tiny (closet-sized) Pressed Juicery in case you need more green juice in your life.
